Music with Studying
Music has been closed to the life in KIS Jeju. Students participate in various musical activities, such as strings activities, musical band activities, and rock band during the time when we did KIS Got Talent and Battle of the Bands. Like this, music has been going along with KIS Islanders. Last year, all dorm students were able to listen to music during study hall. However, as school policies changed and rules in dorm have changed, students now are not able to listen to music during study hall except having school work related to having sound. Students have been feeling not really comfortable during study hall without music. Why is music needed during study hall?
First, it helps students to be focused while studying. Even though study hall is the time when students are being quiet and working on each one’s works, nobody can make absolute silence. There is going to be at least some noise during 2 hours, including talking and sounds of various materials. It is true that those noise can distract students from concentration. Music blocks those small and big noises and helps students to be focused on their work. Without music, students would be prevented from totally focusing on their work. It also doesn’t mean that students are listening to k-pop and pop musics only. There are students who would like to listen to classic music so that they can focus on their work by relaxing themselves.
Second, all students have different best conditions for studying. Some students like to work with music, that there are also some students who would like to work without music. Making students not to listen to music at all would make negative effects in students’ work. Students who had been studying with music wouldn’t be feeling comfortable without music. Even though students have to be adapted to condition of silence for the environment of tests, students have the right to act whatever they want to do during study hall for their best skills.
Finally, whether listening to music or not, is the student’s choice, not the school’s choice. Last year, when we were free to listen music, there were students who didn’t listened to music, and it was because they didn’t want to. Now, school is making us not listen to music at all, which means no choice. Study hall is basically a time that students use for their improvement in abilities. Students have right to perform anything that they think it will benefit them improving their skills. Once we allow students to listen to music during study hall freely, the students will make their choice which will benefit them.
Music has been close to students. As I interviewed students in KIS Dorm A3, some students replied listening to music has been a habit. Music makes students to be relaxed, and patient for themselves. Music isn’t playing. Giving students free to listen music during study hall is a respect for students from school.
